Radio heads criticize New York Mets infielder Daniel Murphy over paternity decision

Mike Francesa and Boomer Esiason of Boomer and Carton, two of New York radio’s top billers, have taken some shots at New York Mets infielder Daniel Murphy over his paternity time.

To make this point clear, Major League Baseball and the Players Union agreed that each player will receive three days of paternity leave. Murphy took advantage of this time missing Opening Day and the second game of the Mets three game series against the Washington Nationals.

Esiason made his thoughts well known according to People.com,  “Quite frankly, I would’ve said, ‘C-section before the season starts,’ ” former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason said Tuesday on his daily morning radio show, Boomer and Carton, according to Today.com. “[I’d say] ‘I need to be at opening day. This is what makes our money, this is how we’re going to live our life, this is going to give our child every opportunity to be a success in life. I’ll be able to afford any college I want to send my kid to because I’m a baseball player.”

In the same report by People.com, Francesa shared his thoughts, “One day, I understand. And in the old days they didn’t do that. But one day, go see the baby be born and come back. You’re a Major League Baseball player. You can hire a nurse to take care of the baby if your wife needs help,” Francesa said Wednesday on his WFAN afternoon sports show, according to New York’s Daily News.”

Murphy though was defended by Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson, “The paternity-leave policy was introduced not just for the players’ benefit, but recognition by clubs in contemporary times that this is an appropriate time for parents to be together. So I’ve got absolutely no problem whatsoever with Murphy being away … I’m happy he was able to be with his wife and the fact that he’ll be back [Thursday] and only really missed two games is a positive for us.”

The fact that this is being discussed is not only ludicrous but ridiculous. I applaud men like Michael Kay, Dan La Greca and others that defended Daniel Murphy. It shouldn’t even be a conversation whether or not he stayed with his wife and child, and to ridicule his decision is completely stupid.

As for Francesa and Esiason should be suspended indefinitely for their comments, especially for Boomer, who is no Dan Marino to say the least should even say what he said.

My own personal view is if you’re a professional athlete, regular everyday working person, actor/actress or anything family comes first and the job comes second. As for the Murphy family I congratulate you on your newest addition and I wish you all the best.
