Sports News: Jackson Released, MLB toughens PEDs, Cabrera and Trout resigned

Both Major League Baseball and the National Football League have made some headlines concerning both players and league issues.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a 10 year, $292 million contract extension. In following this news as reported by ESPN.com the Los Angeles Angels and Mike Trout have agreed to a six year, $144 million deal.

Major League Baseball and the players union in another report by ESPN have agreed to toughen PED suspensions.  For first timers the ban is increased from 50 to 80, second timers have risen to a full season of 162 as opposed to 100 and the third strike is still a lifetime ban.

The Philadelphia Eagles released wide receiver DeSean Jackson, according to NFL.com. The team has stated that they were “concerned” with some Jackson’s off the field activities including alleged gang related affiliations and being absent to meetings.

According to NFL.com Jackson, made a statement, “I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values.

“I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true. I look forward to working hard for my new team. God Bless.”

Jackson is expected to received significant interest from the New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers among others.
