Danish Zoo Kills baby Giraffe, feed remains to lions

The Copenhagen Zoo killed, performed an autopsy and feed the remains of two-year old giraffe named Marius to lions all in front of kids in Denmark on Sunday.

Zookeepers felt that due to high volume of the animals that they needed to prevent inbreeding. They used a bolt pistol to kill the animal instead of lethal injection, to the chagrin and horror of animal activists everywhere. Reports suggested that several zoos made last ditch efforts to save the young giraffe to no avail.

The zookeepers did what the zoo called a demonstration of the anatomy of the animal in front of visitors, including children. Chopping up and skinning the animal, the meat was then going to be used to feed predatory animals such as; Lions, Bears and Tigers that the zoo houses.

The zoo’s scientific director Bengt Holst commented on the zoo’s decision to put down Marius, “Giraffes today breed very well, and when they do you have to choose and make sure the ones you keep are the ones with the best genes. The most important factor must be that the animals are healthy physically and behaviorally and that they have a good life while they are living, whether this life is long or short,” according to an article from the DailyMail.co.uk.com.

Also noted in the Daily Mail piece that the Copenhagen Zoo has destroyed 20-30 every year the other animals including; Tigers, Bears and Zebras.

Animal lovers have voiced their displeasure at the horrific act.

“This was a brutal sight and I can’t believe they didn’t want to send it to another zoo, idiots, this is why I hate people,” proclaimed Mark.

Others believed that the giraffe should have been put into the lion cages alive, where he can be given a fighting chance.

The site of a “murder” of a healthy animal makes us question the nature of humans in general. In the animal kingdom animals hunt to survive and viewers witness this as a way of life; this incident on the other hand was not one of those circumstances.
